Fallen Doll (2022)
Medium Color pencil, gouache on charcoal paper
Description This still life was created by hand from start to finish. Upon reading news articles surrounding Kamila Valieva, the Russian figure skater, I felt disheartened that she was being portrayed as a villain. I made the dolls to appear to be skating on ice skates. The nesting dolls made from clay were then painted in the traditional Russian style. I also used a friend as reference for the Valieva figure, I then placed the assemblage of sculptures onto a sheet of plexiglass to appear like ice. I then scratched in intersected circles to replicate the Olympic symbol. All of this was done as a preliminary still life sculpture, which would be the basis to the final color pencil drawing.
